Slack is when the current reverses and eases, not high or low tide. In the canal the two can be hours apart.

Water temperature

57°F

Measured at the Cape Cod Bay buoy, about 10 miles northeast of the east end.

This is the closest measured reading. There's no temperature sensor in the canal itself.

These are tide heights, not current turns. In the canal the current turns when the water at the two ends stands at about the same height, which can be hours from high or low water at either end.

How the canal's current works

The Cape Cod Canal is a sea-level cut with no locks. It joins two bays whose tides do not match. NOAA calls this a hydraulic current, meaning one driven by the difference in tide height at the two ends, and it names the canal as an example. The Coast Pilot agrees: the gap in tide range and timing between the two bays drives strong currents in the canal.

Range and timing. NOAA gives a mean tide range of 8.74 feet at Sandwich Marina, at the Cape Cod Bay end, and 3.91 feet at Piney Point in Buzzards Bay. The timing is offset too. On October 1, 2026, NOAA predicts high water at Piney Point at 12:06 pm and at Sandwich at 3:14 pm.

Which way is flood. In the canal, flood runs east toward Cape Cod Bay and ebb runs west toward Buzzards Bay. That is the Coast Pilot's usage, and the Army Corps calls the ebb the "westerly" tide. NOAA's headings for the three stations are 41° to 66° true for flood and 217° to 248° true for ebb: northeast and southwest along the canal. At the Sandwich end the names can feel backward. On October 1 the east-end flood peaks at 9:39 am, soon after low water there at 9:04 am, as water runs out of the canal into the bay. The Corps' tide booklet avoids the problem by listing when the current "turns east" and "turns west".

Slack is not high or low tide. NOAA says that in a hydraulic current, slack comes when the two ends stand at nearly the same height, and the current runs hardest when the difference is greatest. On October 1, high water at Sandwich comes at 3:14 pm, but the east-end current turns west at 1:27 pm and runs hardest west at 4:01 pm. Take the turn from the current predictions. The current eases around the turn. On a hard run, a lure drifts and swings faster.

How the three stations differ. They turn at nearly the same time. The Corps' booklet notes that the Sandwich current turns about 15 minutes before the Railroad Bridge. On the afternoon of October 1, NOAA's slack times are 1:27 pm at the east end, 1:33 pm at the West End and 1:37 pm at the Railroad Bridge.

Speed varies more. The Coast Pilot gives 4.0 knots on the flood and 4.5 knots on the ebb "under ordinary conditions". NOAA's Railroad Bridge predictions peak higher: 6.03 knots westbound on October 1, and 6.41 knots on April 19, the strongest in its 2026 predictions. At the West End the westward run is much stronger: 5.29 knots against 3.16 eastward on October 1.

Speed also changes with depth. This page shows the east end at 15 feet, closest to the 13-foot readings at the other two stations. NOAA publishes the east end at other depths as well: on the afternoon of October 1 its westward run peaks at 3.97 knots at 8 feet, 3.89 knots at 15 feet and 3.41 knots at 34 feet.

Limits. These are astronomical predictions. NOAA says it cannot predict the effect of wind and other short-term weather.

For how moving water forms seams and rips, see how to read a rip. Whether bass face into moving water is a separate question: do striped bass face into the current?. The same tables apply through the fall run (when do stripers leave Massachusetts).

Boaters: federal rules prohibit fishing by boat in the canal, except west of the State Pier in Buzzards Bay outside the buoyed channel (33 CFR 207.20). The Coast Pilot advises low-powered boats to wait for slack water or a favorable current.
